“It’s not a phase mom”

This post corresponds to the Momic chapter: “it’s not a phase mom.” You can read it on Webtoon here.

like every other trend following human I jumped on the “wednesday” bandwagon and binged the first season in 3 days. Spoiler alert: I LOVE IT.

As a recovering weeaboo the high-school au addams family drama unlocked my deeply repressed middle-school fanfiction memories. If I was 13 I would probably be sporting a wednesday graphic tee from hot topic by now.

it’s strange to think that those days are now a decade in the past.

When I was 13 jared leto from 30 seconds to mars (specifically in “the kill” music video) was my ultimate celebrity crush. I listened to the suburban rage of post-hardcore bands like Pierce the veil, a day to remember, and bring me the horizon while skatebaording in my parents basement.

Those were the days of vampires vs. wearwolves, rubber bracelets, beanies, and a lover-affair with vans sneakers.

I distinctly remember at a family barbecue my older cousins telling me that my emo identity would come and go. I uttered the famous cringe preteen phrase:

“It’s not a phase.”

It was indeed a phase.

in 2036 my son will turn 13 years old and I wonder to myself what he will be like. Will he be into sports? Will he love music? Will he fall into the pit of whatever reiteration of emo/punk/goth exists in the future?

I just know one thing. If I ever hear him say “It’s not a phase mom,” I will probably fall onto the floor laughing.

As they say, history always repeats itself.
